Peg's father and grandfather were both successful velvet merchants based in Manchester and from an early age she visited cloth mills with her father. She quickly learnt the technical processes involved in printing cloth. Using her considerable artistic skill she was employed by various people to design fabric and wallpaper from the late 30's until the mid 70's.
